Smart Phone Popularity Among Latinos Continues to Grow

¡Mas rapido que el internet en casa! “Faster than the internet at home!” blares on 97.9FM La Raza, a popular Latino radio station in Los Angeles. This ad in Spanish promotes mobile broadband in smart phones and captures the attention of millions of Latino listeners across Los Angeles County during the rush hour commute. It is clear that smartphones have become an important technological advance that has shifted the way individuals interact with their phones. But, why does the Spanish advertisement compare home broadband to the smart phone internet capacity?

It turns out that smart phones have become notoriously popular among Hispanics of all socioeconomic backgrounds and the popularity of smart phones continues to grow. Below are the three most surprising findings about smart phone and social media usage among Latinos:

1. Hispanics rely more on mobile broadband than home broadband
Studies have shown that Hispanics are less likely to have a home broadband connection and instead rely more on mobile broadband. In fact, many individuals in the Hispanic population choose smart phones and use them as their only access to the internet. The study displayed in the chart below also depicts that Hispanic households are more likely to own internet and video enabled cell phones.*

2. Social media usage among Hispanics is growing at an incredible rate
Along with the increase of smartphone usage, the use of social media websites among Hispanics has dramatically increased. Hispanic Facebook users grew a whopping 167 percent compared to 21 percent among non-Hispanics from April 2010 to April 2011. Facebook account ownership is still soaring amongst Latinos.
 
3. Hispanics spend the most time on social networks
Studies have also shown that Hispanics are increasingly spending time in social networks daily. The average number of minutes spent on social networking sites of Hispanic Americans is 29, which is higher than the time White and Black Americans spend (19 and 21 minutes respectively).

Today, nearly one in six Americans are Latino. Brands reaching out to the Hispanic population in the United States should consider targeting the highly active Latin mobile users who are constantly interacting with their phones. Based on the research, it appears that a marketer can reach the Hispanic community more effectively through a mobile promotion than an online promotion.
